Sverrir Steinsson

I am a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science at George Washington University. As of Fall 2024, I will be Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto's Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy. My research explores the macro-structures underlying contemporary and historical world politics.

I have several primary lines of research. First, I am interested in how digital technology is creating new institutional forms, empowering new actors, and establishing new venues of conflict and cooperation. My research on this topic is forthcoming in American Political Science Review.

Second, I explore how war transforms politics and society, with a particular focus on state formation and empires. One paper in this vein recently appeared in International Organization.

Third, I am interested in small states in world politics, with a particular focus on asymmetric conflicts. I have published on this in Cooperation and Conflict, Foreign Policy Analysis, European Security, and Scandinavian Journal of History

I have a BA in Political Science and an MA in International Affairs, both from the University of Iceland.
